A Super Short Review on Some Mainstream Shonen Jump Manga

Hi friends, it's been a little while, and that Top 10 Pokemon list left a bad taste in my mouth. So I am writing now about some manga that continue to impress a reader like me on a weekly basis.

Reading on a manga scanlation site is not the most virtuous thing to think about, because the site accepts manga chapters that have been translated by a team of translators and scanners and people who actually buy the chapters, so that they can be enjoyed by a large group for the cost of a single person. Despite the obvious sign that, maybe I should just buy the chapter myself so that I don't feel as bad, it is so easy to access it on the internet like so many other things on the internet.

In any case, Shonen Jump is where many mainstream action manga/anime hits come from. The Big 3- Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach all came from Shonen Jump. The idea of the "Big 3" is currently in the process of changing, because Naruto and Bleach both ended. However, that doesn't mean that there aren't manga series in the process of breaking into that area of the Big 3.

I should explain that Shonen Jump isn't the only manga magazine publisher in Japan. Shonen Jump is a magazine published by Japanese entertainment publisher Shueisha, which was previously a branch of Shogakukan. The largest name in Japanese publishing, Kodansha is also relevant to this manga discussion.

Despite there being three major manga publishers, Shueisha with Shonen Jump stands out as the top magazine. The reason being that the top 3 most sold shonen manga are all from Shonen Jump: One Piece, Dragon Ball, and Naruto.

Currently, One Piece is in the running to be one of Shonen Jump's biggest series yet. 21 years into publication, and it has the highest sales of any shonen series. Also, it is stated to be just over halfway into the story.

Some promising manga series are My Hero Academia, Dr. Stone, and Haikyu!!. These manga series have the potential to gain as large a following as the Big 3.

My Hero Academia is a superhero manga that picks up the ol' weak main character trope and makes you feel as if it's an original idea.

This sure feels like a cursed image.

1. The superhero genre will be/ already is a hit with Western audiences.
2. Having the main character's attacks named after American locations brings the American audience even closer to the show.
3. Giving Midoriya a hard-working attitude and yet dense and embarassed towards girls builds a typical open-ended romance genre into an action manga.
4. As readers and fan artists have responded, My Hero Academia is similar to Naruto, in design, powers, character groupings, mentors, and character development.
5. The true intentions of the villains are never revealed, leaving them open for more story arcs
6. Midoriya never seems to reach full power, making a timeskip unnecessary.

With a well-animated anime as well as a manga that keeps delivering with intensity, My Hero Academia is on the fast track to climbing up the manga popularity ladder.

Dr. Stone is rather new, its debut having been in March of last year. However, its interesting premise, that young men and women of Japan engage in a philosophical battle to decide the ways of a petrified world, allow the author to build up the characters.

Senku and his friend Taiju break out of the strange
petrification that affects the entire world.

1. The theme of science versus violence allows the author to build up Tsukasa and Senku as the champions of their respective domains. The author builds up science as good and violence as bad.
2. The mix of primitive and modern humans in a world that both are unfamiliar with creates a setting that increases the importance of the main theme.
3. This manga is an interesting take on sci-fi, action, and adventure because the characters never leave Planet Earth.
4. Senku is the character that carries the manga. Through his super intelligence, he attempts to build back up a world that has lost millennia of innovations in science. Through him, we can relate to the other characters and the story.

Despite not having an anime, Dr. Stone is likely to get one soon. The manga's style, especially when the most unbelievable things are theorized - like when Senku says that cell phones are possible to be created in a primitive world, is engaging and fun.

Haikyu!! has proven itself to be an iconic sports manga of Shonen Jump. Through the volleyball club of Karasuno High School, readers can experience the tension and excitement of playing volleyball.

A murder of crows ready to play volleyball.

1. Hinata Shoyo has orange hair, is super small, and yet despite these odds becomes a key player as a first year.
2. Unlike other sports anime/manga, Haikyu!! hasn't gotten rid of its third years yet.
3. Something that really helps the manga/anime out is the visualization of the volleyball style of each team being based off of the school's mascot. Karasuno crows playing volleyball like crows, Nekoma cats playing volleyball like cats.
4. The sudden unexpected amazing plays from players, even if they're not from Karasuno create a moment of pause to the viewer or reader and it will cause your skin to raise goosebumps.

Haikyu!! has a high following and its anime really does a good job. One of the few anime I would say does a better job than the manga. Haikyu!! is the closest to achieving good sales numbers, being only 2 million sales under Kuroko's Basketball, whose anime got multiple omakes (side story anime episodes) and an epilogue movie.

Although these 3 manga are currently not close to the Big 3, in terms of influence, following, or sales, they have the potential to break out of the shell of the Big 3 if they are given time, and if the authors play their cards properly. Cut the manga too short, and the story won't have been given enough time to gather readers. Allow the manga to lose tension and readers won't be engaged enough. I think the manga will be fine though.

"The last ones standing are the victors. Only the strongest. If you want to be the last one standing become strong."

-Tobio Kageyama, Haikyu!!

Update 7/31

Hello folks, Hahahahaha. I've been working in service for a little bit so that's a go-to phrase for me now.  Couple things I want to say in this update. 1. It's Lorie Meza's birthday! Hope you had a great day and hope you have a good party on Sunday! 2. I've got a couple posts in the works. I know it's really bad to keep lying to your audience about new posts coming out. I have some excuses though. 3. I've been keeping this from my blog because I wasn't sure I wanted to share it on the internet, but I have depression and ADHD and these two things combine to keep me from staying committed to my blog. Sometimes I feel inspired to make content and then I can't finish it. I do care about this blog though, and that's why I write these updates. For some reason, writing to the audience without having to make content feels much easier. So yeah, that's pretty much what's up with the blog. If anyone's interested in what games I've

A Greater Understanding of Shonen Jump

I have produced many opinions about manga and anime. That's kind of the point of this blog. And now I am realizing that I have been missing a key point about manga that was kind of necessary so that my opinions were a little more informed than just a criticism of big name manga. That key point is the factor of Shounen Jump manga having the "it" quality. Some very inexperienced readers might call it perfection. It's definitely not perfection, but manga of Shounen Jump that can last for multiple arcs have qualities that are significantly different and significantly better than that of other shounen manga. I will defend my viewpoints on certain things so that I don't out myself as a total hypocrite. First, webtoons, or specifically manhwa webtoons, or specifically God of Highschool is a very unique manga and is further justified by the fact that it is getting an anime. Second, despite not being in Shounen Jump, there are other shounen series that are different an
